When most people think about transportation planning, they think about route optimization; what routes do trucks take from location to location to minimize the mileage and transportation time. An area of transportation planning that is just as important is freight optimization also known as load planning.
Basic functionality, every product should have
Transportation planning is an area of SCM that is well matured. Most products on the market boast similar functionality, such as multi-mode capabilities (truck, ship, air), season-dependent costs and capacity, truck axle weight balancing, to name just a few.
How Wahupa is different
If all you are looking for is route optimization then Wahupa is likely overkill for you and we'd suggest looking at alternatives. If load planning is a primary objective, especially in combination with route optimization, Wahupa SCM should be on your list of products to evaluate, since few products combine both in a single optimization. If you have issues in both transportation and production planning then Wahupa is your only choice: all supply chain management aspects are combined in one product.
The benefits are most visible in two places: alignment of production and transportation schedules, making both feasible, and constraints that could otherwise not be included in scheduling of loading and unloading. Typical production issues such as changeovers and contamination, product availability, and product routing constraints can extend into loading and the load optimization. The result is far fewer changes to the plans, proactive instead of reactive (un)loading, and significantly lower costs.
